How-to guide
How to choose a Christmas food gift for Mom
September 24, 2026
Christmas week is the busiest week in Mom's kitchen. Here's how to pick a food gift that gives her a break instead of another job, from sizing it to how she hosts to landing it on the right day.
Jump to the steps
Christmas week is the busiest week in Mom's kitchen. There's the big meal to plan, the cookies nobody asked for but everybody expects, and a fridge that's already full. So a gift that adds to the list (a baking kit, a cookbook, a fancy ingredient she has to figure out) isn't really a gift. It's homework.
The best food gift for Mom does the opposite. It shows up ready, it feeds whoever's around, and it gives her one less thing to make. Here's how to choose one in five steps, and how to make sure it lands on the right day.
What to figure out first
Answer these six questions before you shop. It takes about 15 minutes, and it's the difference between a gift she uses and one she has to find room for.
- How she hostsChristmas Eve for two, drop-ins all week, or the whole family on the 25th?
- Who's eatingA rough headcount. It decides the size more than anything else.
- What she lovesCheese and charcuterie, cheese only, or something sweet?
- Where she'll beHome all week, or traveling to someone else's table?
- Your budgetOur holiday boards run $139, $169 and $249. The Holiday Bundle is $299.
- A few wordsTwo or three sentences for the gift note. More on that in step 5.
Figure out how she'll actually use it
Start with the Christmas she really has, not the one in the commercials. A food gift that's the wrong size is either gone in ten minutes or taking up half her fridge until New Year's.
If it's a quiet Christmas Eve for two, a Classic board serves 2 to 3. If people stop by all week, a Medium serves 4 to 6 and holds up well between visits. If she's hosting the whole family, go Large (serves 10 to 14) or the Holiday Bundle, which adds four baked brie pastries to the Large board and serves 12 to 15.
Torn between two sizes? Pick the bigger one. Christmas guests have a way of multiplying, and a board that's still half full on the 26th is a win, not a waste. It's lunch.
Pick food she won't have to cook
Here's the test: if it needs the oven, the stovetop or a cutting board, it's a chore with a bow on it. The oven is already booked for the ham. The counter is already covered in cookie dough.
Our holiday boards pass the test. Every one arrives fully arranged on a reusable acacia wood board, chef-curated and made fresh daily, with crackers and a bamboo cutlery kit in the box. She opens it and it's ready to graze. No slicing, no plating, nothing.
One honest note: the Holiday Bundle's four brie pastries arrive ready to bake, so that's a few minutes in the oven. The board itself needs zero work. If she's hosting the big dinner, stick with a board alone and save the brie for another day.
Match it to what she loves
Now the fun part. Think about what she reaches for at a party. Cheese and charcuterie is the classic, and our Happy Holidays Board comes with gingerbread man and candy cane cheese cutouts that make it feel like Christmas the second the lid comes off.
Doesn't eat meat? The Holiday Cheese Board (No Meat) skips the charcuterie and keeps everything else: hand-selected artisan cheeses, dried fruits, nuts, chocolates and jam. For other restrictions, we put together a guide to gourmet gifts for people with dietary restrictions.
Big sweet tooth? The Classic Dessert Board carries 19+ gourmet desserts and a wooden hammer for smashing the chocolate box. She will absolutely pretend it's for the grandkids 😅.
Time the delivery for Christmas week
Timing is where a good gift becomes a great one. Every board is prepared fresh the day before it ships, goes out overnight and arrives chilled. It keeps 5 to 7 days in the fridge, so aim for a few days before the busiest day, not the busiest day itself. A board that shows up on the 22nd or 23rd covers the whole stretch of cooking and visitors.
She doesn't need to be home when it arrives. Our insulated packaging keeps the board chilled in its box all day. You can pick any delivery date in the next 365 days, and shipping is free nationwide.
Not sure where she'll be? Send it as an e-gift. She gets a gift email on the day you choose, then enters her own address and picks the delivery date that works. No address needed from you.
Write a note that says why
Every board can carry a personalized gift note, and it's the part she'll keep. Skip the generic "Merry Christmas." Tell her what the gift is for: "Take the night off. You've fed us for 30 years." Or "No cooking allowed on the 23rd. Love, the kids."
Two or three sentences is plenty. Say it the way you'd say it in person. She'll hear it that way too.
If the whole family is chipping in, sign it from everyone. And if you're sending it from across the country because you can't be there, say so. A board that shows up in your place tells her you were thinking about her anyway, and that's the part she'll mention on the phone later.
Pro tips
-
Size up if she's hosting
If you're stuck between two sizes, go bigger. Leftovers keep 5 to 7 days in the fridge, and nobody complains about extra cheese.
-
Skip the gifts with homework
Cookbooks, baking kits and fancy pantry staples all ask her to do something. Christmas week, she's already doing plenty.
-
Book December dates early
Popular December delivery dates can sell out. Lock in the date now and the hardest part is done.
-
Unsure of her plans? E-gift it
She picks the delivery date and enters the address herself. You just need her email.
Or let us handle the whole thing
Our Christmas charcuterie boards arrive fully arranged, gingerbread men and all, on the date you pick. They're chef-curated, made fresh daily and shipped chilled. She opens the box. That's it.
